ONDA in Korea

ONDA delivers microwave energy rather than radiofrequency or ultrasound, which lets it target the fat layer while passing comparatively gently through the skin. It is usually chosen for the lower face and for body areas where a small pocket of fat is the complaint.

How it works

ONDA uses microwave energy in a frequency range that is absorbed preferentially by fat. The handpiece is moved over the area while energy passes through the surface layers and heats the tissue beneath, with a cooled contact plate keeping the skin itself comparatively cool.

Two things are meant to follow. Heated fat cells are damaged and cleared over the following weeks, and the heat in the overlying dermis prompts a firming response. Neither happens quickly, and both depend on the area treated.

How it differs from other devices

Energy Mainly aimed at
ONDA Microwave Localised fat, with some skin firming
Monopolar RF (Thermage and similar) Radiofrequency Dermal heating for firmness
Focused ultrasound (Ultherapy, Shurink) Ultrasound Discrete points at set depths for lifting

The practical difference is where the energy prefers to go. Monopolar radiofrequency heats the dermis broadly and is chosen when skin quality and firmness are the complaint. Focused ultrasound concentrates energy at fixed depths and is chosen for laxity along the jawline and neck. ONDA sits apart from both because fat is what absorbs the energy, so it is considered when the problem is a pocket of fullness rather than loose skin.

Who it suits

  • A full lower face or under-chin area in someone whose skin still has reasonable tone
  • Small body areas — flanks, abdomen, inner thigh, upper arm — where diet and exercise have stopped making a difference
  • People who want to avoid downtime and can accept gradual change

Who it does not suit

It is not a treatment for significant excess weight, and it will not tighten skin that has already lost its elasticity — removing volume from lax skin can make the laxity more obvious. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, and implanted electrical devices are standard reasons to wait or to choose something else. If the complaint is a dropped jawline rather than fullness, ultrasound lifting addresses that problem more directly.

Anyone whose fullness is partly swelling, or partly the shape of the underlying bone and muscle, should expect less from it than someone with a clearly pinchable pocket.

The session

No numbing is usually needed. Gel is applied, the area is marked, and the handpiece is worked over each zone in passes while the operator watches surface temperature. A lower face takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes; a body area longer, depending on size.

The sensation builds as each zone is worked and settles between passes. Tell the operator if the heat stops being tolerable rather than enduring it — the energy is adjustable for a reason.

Afterwards

Mild redness and warmth for a few hours, sometimes tenderness or a firm feeling in the treated area for several days. Normal activity, washing and makeup are fine the same day. Occasionally small firm lumps can be felt under the skin for a week or two as treated fat is cleared.

The course

Typical
Sessions 2–3 for most areas
Interval 3–4 weeks
When to judge 2–3 months after the final session
Maintenance Depends on whether the area returns

Weight that goes back up will undo contour work, which is the honest limit of any fat-reduction device.

What to ask

  1. Is my problem fat, lax skin, or both — and which device is for which part?
  2. How many sessions do you expect for this area, and what would you do if the first one changes little?
  3. What should the treated area feel like in the first fortnight, and when should I call you?

FAQ

Is this a weight loss treatment?

No. It is used for localised pockets of fat in people who are already near the shape they want. It does not change body weight and it does not treat the causes of weight gain.

How uncomfortable is it?

Most people describe warmth that builds and then eases as the handpiece moves, without the sharp points that focused ultrasound can produce. It is usually done without numbing cream.

How soon would I see anything?

Changes in contour appear gradually over weeks rather than immediately, because the body clears treated fat slowly. Judge it a couple of months after a course, not the week after a session.

Can it be combined with lifting treatments?

Often, since it works on a different problem. Whether to combine and in what order is a clinical judgement — ask what each device in a package is actually for.
