CO2 Fractional Laser in Korea

A fractional CO2 laser removes microscopic columns of skin and leaves untreated skin between them to heal from. It is the strongest treatment described on this site, and the only one with downtime that genuinely needs planning around.

A dense array of fine points on a pale surface

How it works

A CO2 laser removes tissue rather than only heating it. Delivered fractionally, the beam is split into an array of narrow columns that penetrate to a chosen depth, leaving the skin between them intact. Those untreated bridges are what make the treatment survivable: they supply the cells that resurface the columns, so healing takes days rather than weeks.

Each column then contracts and remodels as it heals, which is what changes scar depth and surface texture. Coverage — how much of the area is columns and how much is spared — is the main lever between a light resurfacing and a serious one.

What it is used for

  • Acne scarring, particularly boxcar and rolling scars
  • Rough or thickened texture, enlarged pores
  • Sun-damaged skin with fine lines and surface irregularity
  • Some raised lesions and small benign growths, treated individually

Who it suits

Someone whose main complaint is the surface of the skin, who has finished with active acne, and who has a fortnight in which looking treated is acceptable. It suits people prepared to commit to a course rather than hoping one visit will settle years of scarring.

Who it does not suit

Active acne should be controlled first — resurfacing skin that is still breaking out wastes the treatment. Anyone with a history of keloid scarring, recent isotretinoin use, an active cold sore in the area, or a tendency to pigment strongly afterwards needs that discussed before booking, not after. Anyone who cannot avoid sun for weeks should choose something else for now.

It does not lift. Laxity along the jawline is a different problem with different tools, and no amount of resurfacing addresses it. Deep ice-pick scars and tethered scars often need subcision or excision alongside laser work, which the acne scars page sets out.

The session

Numbing cream for thirty to sixty minutes, sometimes with injected local anaesthetic for deeper work. Eyes are shielded, and the handpiece is passed over each zone; a smell of singed skin is normal and the extraction fan handles most of it. Fifteen to forty minutes for a full face, depending on depth and coverage.

It feels hot and prickling, strongest over the cheeks and around the nose. Afterwards the skin feels like sunburn for several hours.

Recovery

Typical
Days 1–2 Swelling, heat, marked redness; ointment and gentle cleansing
Days 3–5 Fine bronzed flaking, tight skin
Days 5–7 Most flaking finished, pink skin underneath
Weeks 2–6 Pinkness fading; makeup usually fine once flaking has stopped

Do not pick or exfoliate the flaking. Follow the clinic’s own aftercare instruction over anything written here, since it reflects what was actually done.

The course

Usually three sessions, spaced roughly four to six weeks apart, with texture continuing to improve for months after the last. Deeper scarring often takes more, and clinics commonly alternate methods rather than repeating one.

Because of the sun, the sensible window in Korea is autumn through early spring. Starting a course in midsummer means fighting the ultraviolet that causes the main complication.

What to ask

  1. What depth and coverage are you planning, and what does that mean for my downtime?
  2. How many sessions do you expect, and which other methods would you combine?
  3. What is your plan if I darken afterwards, and who do I contact while I am still here?

FAQ

How much downtime should I plan for?

Typically three to seven days of visible redness and flaking for a moderate treatment, with residual pinkness for some weeks afterwards. Deeper treatment means longer, so ask what is planned for you rather than assuming.

Can I have it during a short trip to Seoul?

Only if you accept looking visibly treated for the rest of it, and if you have a way to be seen again should something need checking. Many people choose a gentler option for a short trip and save this for a longer stay.

Will one session fix acne scarring?

It is almost always a course, and scarring is usually treated with more than one method. Judge the result months after the final session, since remodelling continues long after the skin has healed.

Is it risky for skin that pigments easily?

Darkening after treatment is the common complication in this part of the world. It is usually temporary but can take months to settle, and it is the main reason settings are kept conservative and sun avoidance is insisted on.
